The very first course designed by Dr. Alister MacKenzie was Alwoodley, in 1907.
MacKenzie was both a founder member of Alwoodley and also the first secretary until he resigned in May 1909. He was then immediately elected as a member of the green committee.
He became captain of Alwoodley in 1912.
In 1926, MacKenzie embarked on the first of several overseas trips that would see him established as the first truly international golf course architect.
MacKenzie would go on to design some of the world’s most iconic and highly-ranked golf courses.
His designs feature strategic options, intricate bunkering, and natural-looking contours that reward ground play.
