Captain’s Welcome

We extend a warm Yorkshire greeting to all visitors

A note from the captain

We are delighted to welcome all our visitors to enjoy and experience what we are privileged to enjoy as members.

From the moment you arrive at our club you will leave behind any worries as our club envelops you into its unique atmosphere and environment.

I’ve been a member for over 30 years and never get bored of playing this amazing golf course. Founded in 1907 by a group of Leeds businessmen with great foresight, and a supreme architect, Dr Alister MacKenzie, designer of the great Augusta National, our original ‘Wigton Moor’ has been transformed into a course now ranked within the top 50 in Great Britain and Ireland.

Our clubhouse provides excellent catering and changing facilities for you to enjoy both pre and post golf. Our sizeable practice range, recently modified, is conveniently sited just behind the well-stocked pro’s shop and our Professional, John Green, and his staff are sure to cater for all your needs on arrival. On walking through to the 1st tee, one is met by a wonderful vista of the 1st and 18th holes together with an attractive practice putting green to hone your touch.

Whether you select the white, yellow or red tees, experience tells me that straight driving is certainly rewarded. The alternative, shall we say, is ‘taking your medicine’ but AGC is very fair to the sensible golfer. Making your score over the first 12 holes is a necessity as the final six do require great mental and physical effort to counter the prevailing wind. On the occasions when the wind does blow from the east, wrap up well! The occasional glance to the Heavens, as one negotiates the course, is more likely to be met by the ever-present red kites rather than divine inspiration. Recent sensitive management of the course offers glimpses of the Yorkshire Dales as one “turns for home.”.

I often feel the final reward comes on the elevated 18th tee with a magnificent view to and beyond the clubhouse and a warm feeling of nearly having made it home in one piece!

A warm welcome is guaranteed to all our visitors – we hope they come back to play again and bring their friends and colleagues to enjoy a unique quality sporting venue.
